Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference?
The content, the level of difficulty & the assessment criteria are absolutely identical in both exam formats: on paper and on computer. The difference is that Reading, Listening & Writing in the computer-based version are taken on computer (not at home, but at the exam center). Speaking is delivered in the same way (face-to-face with an examiner) in both versions: paper & computer-based.
What to choose: to take the exam on paper or computer?
It is better to decide on the format beforehand and to prepare for it purposefully, since there's a number of differences that must be taken into account when developing the skills needed for the exam.
For example, while preparing for Computer-Based exam:
You need to read from the monitor on a regular basis rather than from a hard book when working on your reading skills so that this mode is familiar and comfortable for you on the actual exam.
While Listening, you should be able to immediately type your answers using the keyboard as you listen, since you will not have time to first write them down on a piece of paper and then to transfer them onto the computer.
In order to get a high score on KET/PET/FCE/CAE or CPE, of course, you need to be fluent in English, but, in addition, you are to develop specific skills that you will need on the exam.
For example, if you complete Reading tasks as if you were just reading in real life, without knowing special techniques for taking KET/PET/FCE/CAE or CPE, you simply will not have enough time to answer all the questions.
All tasks on the exam are quite specific and just good knowledge of English will not be enough - you need to be prepared for the KET/PET/FCE/CAE or CPE format.
